On-Grid vs Off-Grid vs Hybrid Solar Systems Explained

“Which type of system do I need?” is one of the first questions we get, and the terminology alone confuses most people before the actual decision-making starts. Here’s what each type actually means, in plain terms.

On-grid (grid-tied) systems

An on-grid system connects directly to the WAPDA/LESCO grid with no battery. During the day, solar power runs your home and any excess can be exported to the grid (subject to net metering approval). At night or during an outage, you draw from the grid as normal — and crucially, if the grid goes down, the system shuts off automatically for safety, meaning no backup power during load shedding.

Best for: households mainly focused on reducing their electricity bill, in areas with relatively stable grid supply, who aren’t primarily trying to solve load shedding.

Off-grid systems

An off-grid system is fully independent of the utility grid — panels charge a battery bank, and the home runs entirely off that stored power, with no WAPDA connection feeding it at all. This requires a larger, more expensive battery setup since it has to cover all your needs with zero grid fallback.

Best for: remote properties with no reliable grid access at all. Genuinely off-grid setups are uncommon for standard urban/suburban homes in Shahdara and Ferozewala, since grid connection already exists here — hybrid almost always makes more sense.

Hybrid systems

A hybrid system combines both: connected to the grid like an on-grid system, but with a battery like an off-grid system. During the day, it prioritizes solar power; when the grid drops, it switches to battery automatically; when both solar and battery are insufficient, it draws from the grid.
