Some of the most persistent solar misconceptions we hear on-site actually work against the customer’s own interest — and a few even benefit installers financially if left uncorrected. Here’s what’s actually true.

Myth: “Bigger is always better”

Not necessarily. A system sized beyond your actual consumption doesn’t proportionally increase savings, and the extra money is often better spent on battery capacity or a higher-quality inverter than on additional panels you won’t fully use. Always align your system sizing with your real electricity bill.

Myth: “Solar panels don’t work on cloudy days”

They produce less power on cloudy days, but they still generate electricity — diffused light still reaches the panels, just at reduced output compared to direct sun. It’s a reduction, not a total stop.

Myth: “Once installed, solar needs zero maintenance”

Panels themselves are relatively low-maintenance, but the system as a whole — inverter, battery, wiring, connections — benefits from periodic checks. Myth: “Net metering means free, unlimited power export”

Net metering lets you offset your bill with excess solar power exported to the grid, but it comes with approval processes, potential caps, and DISCO-specific rules — it’s a genuine benefit, but not an unlimited or instant one, and the net metering paperwork timeline is worth planning for.

Myth: “A cheaper quote today saves you money overall”

Sometimes true, often not. The equipment brand, warranty terms, and — critically — post-installation support behind a quote matter as much as the number itself. A cheaper system with a vanishing installer and no real warranty backing frequently costs more within a few years than a fairly priced system with genuine support.

Myth: “Solar eliminates your electricity bill completely”

For most residential systems, solar significantly reduces the bill rather than bringing it to zero — actual elimination depends on system size relative to consumption, how much use happens during daylight hours, and whether net metering is in place. Setting this expectation accurately upfront avoids disappointment later.
